1 Corinthians 15:53-55 (NLT) For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”I spent last evening in a youth service with grieving young people. The young girl killed in a horrible tragedy had touched many and her kindness rippled through the crowd as many shared of her character even at the tender age of 16. Their sobs racked my heart. Why God? The grief counselors from the local high school were there – all believers – they talked with some, embraced others tightly and prayed with those who requested it. I was moved by the Presence of God in the midst of such sorrow and heartache. Hugging her mother, I prayed peace and strength walking through this week into her new normal. I could see the …

What Is Faith? (A Sermon on Hebrews 11:1-16)

"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. 3By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not seen."(Hebrews 11:1-3)

I'm focusing today's sermon on our epistle reading from the 'Letter to the Hebrews', and I appreciate that Hebrews is not a book of the New Testament that we tend to spend a lot of time with. There are obvious reasons for that. Hebrews is one of those 'how did he get in?' books of the New Testament. It's one that most of us feel no particular kinship with, as it seems to be written for a very ethno-specific audience, namely for Hebrews. It's full of references to high priests and blood sacrifices in a way that seems alien to those of us who aren't don't have any of that as a part of our direct spiritual heritage. It's not one of the letters of Saint Pa…

Sweet Caress, The Many Lives of Amory Clay by William Boyd

Sweet Caress, the tile of William Boyd´s 2015 novel, refers to the gentle contact the individual makes with the very surface of existence, the contact we loosely call "life". It presents "The many lives of Amory Clay" that are contained in its principal character's existence. As has become the author´s forté, William Boyd again brings to life a character who lives through the history of the twentieth century, impinging upon it, influencing it, being influenced and changed by it and thus consumed by it. It´s called life, and it's linear, constantly reviewed but never relived, always surprising, but at the time apparently predictable. Like history, it's just one thing after another.

William Boyd´s characters are always carefully but lightly drawn. They are never easily caricatured, and even less easily summarised, rather like people, in fact. Their identity is amassed from their experience of life, congeries of circumstance and chance. And, like a great a…

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker

There is perhaps no other tale in European culture that synthesizes history, myth, literature and perhaps religion as famously and as frequently as Homer's Iliad. So often has this story of Bronze Age conflict been adapted, one might wonder why an accomplished writer, known for her apposite, pungent and penetrating comment on contemporary society and its issues should turn to it for inspiration. It is a question that recurs throughout a reading of The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker.

Surely an intentional pun of the similar film title. The substitution of Girls for Lambs, plus the associated allusion to insane slaughter and violence ought to point a reader toward the eventual direction of the book. The fact that this contemporary reality emerges gently and subtly is further evidence of Pat Barker's profound writing skill. In a less accomplished writer's hand, this rather blunt concept might just bludgeon experience with polemic in a similar way to Achilles's sword o…

5 Considerations For Reducing Severity And Frequency Of Colds

We call, colds, common colds, because, they occur frequently! There is no such thing, as a cure, for the common cold! The old joke, about this, is, if you take certain medicines, you'll get rid of it in a week, and, if you don't, it will go away, in seven days. While, it's true, these occur, to all of us, some people suffer with these symptoms, far more often, and regularly than others. While, you can't avoid, ever catching one, there are certain ideas, and actions, which many believe, reduce, both, the severity, and frequency of them. With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, 5 considerations, which are often helpful. However, it's important to realize, if these symptoms are lingering, you may have something, far more serious, than a cold.

1. Fluids: While, it's wise, to, remain hydrated, for better health, when your body, becomes somewhat debilitated, taking additional fluids, is often, warranted, and sm…
