Forever Friends

1 Corinthians 15:53-55 (NLT) For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die,   this Scripture will be fulfilled:  “Death is swallowed up in victory.   O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” I spent last evening in a youth service with grieving young people. The young girl killed in a horrible tragedy had touched many and her kindness rippled through the crowd as many shared of her character even at the tender age of 16. Their sobs racked my heart. Why God? The grief counselors from the local high school were there – all believers – they talked with some, embraced others tightly and prayed with those who requested it. I was moved by the Presence of God in the midst of such sorrow and heartache. Hugging her mother, I prayed peace and strength walking through this week into her new normal. I could

If prayer has a purpose, if prayer is more than a useless anachronism, then your prayer must cause a specific action of God to work in and through the particular network of constraints which are bringing some outcome into being and bring some succession of events to a different outcome than would otherwise have been.  Your prayer must unleash the power of the Holy Spirit in space and time.  Your prayer must change the flow of history.  Your prayer is a message to God sent by a first-cause agent of choice exercising free will and assisted by God’s grace.  Some believe prayer can change the outcome of nothing because God from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass.  The “unpardonable sin” of b

Daily Destiny

Esther 4:14 (ESV) For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” The story of Esther is well-known by Christians for her heroism is saving her people. However, if one were to contemplate her pathway to destiny it would seem to be a tragic turn in this young woman’s life. She was a virgin gathered from her community to be taken to the castle of a king. She would be pampered and prepared to serve the king giving up her virginity in hope that he might delight in her. This was a treasure in Biblical times especially to a Jewish girl. Yet, in an instant it would be taken. She would begin in the harem as a virgin and turned into a concubine in just one night. We know that the king was pleased with Esther and would make her the queen. This would be her destiny. Each one of us have a destiny. The predetermined,

One Bad Review

Image
I Peter 3:8 (TLB) And now this word to all of you: You should be like one big happy family, full of sympathy toward each other, loving one another with tender hearts and humble minds. I just completed an amazing book by a popular Christian author. Biblically sound and very encouraging, I decided to peruse some of his other books to see if anything caught my eye or gave me little nudge. As I waited for the new book to download, I was given the opportunity to review the previous book. Scrolling down, I noticed that the book received a one-star review so I read it. It seemed strange to me that it would not gain mass approval. My spirit sank a little as I read other Christians tearing apart the book. Not because they it was off-base Biblically, but because of personal preference. This particular author shares the story of his church and the amazing journey of faith that has caused the congregation to flourish – all the while giving all the glory to God in very apparent humility. My heart

Fun and Compassion

COMPASSION CAN BE FUN! Bible Reading of the Day: Read Acts 3:1-11. Verse of the Day:  “When darkness overtakes the godly, light will come bursting in. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous” (Psalm 112:4). Bethany was the first to see the man. She and her brother Ben had just walked out of the department store with their father. Sitting on the sidewalk was a whiskered old man in stained clothing. An upturned hat sat beside him on the pavement, and a handwritten cardboard sign pleaded with passersby to “Help the Homeless.” Ben stiffened and Bethany swerved behind Dad. To their surprise, however, Dad stopped. He crouched down and extended his hand toward the man. The man looked suspicious at first, then slowly reached out and shook the hand Dad had offered him. Dad introduced himself and his children by name, then said, “We’re just about to catch a quick lunch at the cafe down the street. We’d be happy to have you join us.” The man looked from Dad to Bethany, then to Ben

Beauty and Compassion

COMPASSION CAN BE BEAUTIFUL! Bible Reading of the Day: Read Romans 15:1-3. Verse of the Day:  “Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, ‘How can I help?’” (Romans 15:2, The Message). Ronita’s Sunday school class was interrupted by the arrival of a new student, who was escorted in by the Sunday school superintendent. Like everyone else in the class, Ronita noticed that the new boy had only one arm; his left arm was missing. Nobody said anything as the boy sat in the seat to Ronita’s right. Ronita smiled at the newcomer, as the teacher continued the Bible story she was telling. After a few minutes, the class seemed to return to normal. The teacher had seemed nervous at first, but when everyone acted normally instead of staring at the boy or talking about him, she seemed to relax. Finally, the teacher looked at the clock on the side wall. “Oh my,” she said, “it’s time to dismiss.” She closed her book and smiled at her students. “Thank

So Are We Under Grace or Not?

Bible Reading:  Hebrews 13:8-16  Jesus Christ  is  the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hebrews  13:8 “I DON’T get it,” Lauren said. “If Christians today are still supposed to obey the Ten Commandments, what does Paul mean when he says in Romans 6: 14 that we are ‘no longer subject to the law’?” Confusing, isn’t it? As Christians who trust in Jesus as God’s provision for our sins, we no longer fear God’s wrath. And understanding how grace and law fit together is the core of what it means to be a Christian. You know that when Jesus died, he paid for our sins and opened the way for us to relate to God. We can know God because of grace-the unmerited, unearned favor of God expressed in Christ’s work on the cross. Christ’s death on the cross removed the need for us to please God by acting perfectly-or die for our failings. Galatians 3:13 says, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us” (NASB). To be no longer under “the curse” of the moral law of

Tough Questions About the Law and Love

Bible Reading:  Matthew 6:19-24 You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24 “A CHRISTIAN friend and I had a big blowup about the fourth commandment-the one about ‘keeping the Sabbath holy,’ ” Kalli said. “Does it mean that I’m sinning if I work on Sunday or cause somebody else to work because I eat out or shop or watch Sunday afternoon football? My friend said the Bible forbids us to work or even do homework on Sundays.” Christians today aren’t under the Old Testament Sabbath law. Following that law would mean halting all work between sundown on Friday and sundown Saturday. That’s the Jewish Sabbath. But don’t miss this point: The  moral principle  behind the Sabbath law was kept by the early Christians who reserved the first day of the week-Sunday-for rest and worship (see Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Revelation 1:10). You don’t have to obey the Old Testament Sabbath law, but you should reserve one day each week for rest and worship (see Hebrews 10:25). For most of us,
