Falling (or Staying!) in Love With Your Business

If you're an entrepreneur, I'm sure you have a story about the naysayers in your midst. It's that moment when you say "darn right I am!" and you follow your dream. For me, it was when I was out with a group of ladies and I was talking about working virtually, supporting clients from home that could be anywhere in the world. They shook their heads, "how is that even possible" or "is that even a job"? Now I'm proud to say there are days I start by talking to a colleague in Taiwan, then New Zealand, sometimes the UK, and then right here at home. It is possible, and it is a real job. I just had to dream it, to make it.

So, where am I going with this?

A good friend of mine is embarking on a career change, and he's trying to figure out what he wants. I simply said, this is your opportunity to create your own job, not look to fit into something else. Over the last year I've watched him work at a job, that he wasn't in love with, the job was something to fill time. We brainstormed together, how can you do what you love (teach), while staying current in your field (advisor) and challenge yourself with new opportunities (mentoring). That's not one "job" that's three passions.

It's hard, isn't it? To create a job versus working at one that's pre-defined.

Two weeks ago, I ran into an old colleague who works for herself and does well. She asked what I had done over the weekend, and when I mentioned I worked on the Sunday, she shook her head, "I'm not there yet". She misunderstood that I was working on the weekend because I had to, the fact is, I want to. I don't wake up dreading the start of my day (OK, there are a few... but rarely do I feel that way). I love what I do, and I love my clients. Checking in and getting ahead are choices, not chores.

Here are a few tips for staying passionate about your business:

Don't be afraid to take a risk or two - try stepping out of your comfort zone occasionally.
Ask your clients for testimonials - when you see the difference you're making, you'll instantly feel more rejuvenated.
Look for opportunities to learn from others - education is always inspiring!
Keep your dreams in front of you - create a vision board and commit to working towards it, even in a small way, every day.
Re-create and recreate - bring new energy into a new program and re-create it, but also take the time for recreation (get out and go for a walk! Join a gym or volunteer). Bring fresh energy into your life, and your business.
